Why do I Model?
When I was in elementary school in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico, I was bullied simply because I was born in another country. The bullying continued until fourth grade, when I met a friend who taught me a lesson I’ve carried for life: not everyone will like you—but you must like and love yourself so no one can ever make you feel less.
Even though my family always told me I was pretty and carried a special light, it was difficult to believe in myself during those years. Racism and bullying left me feeling small in a country that I loved. But once I surrounded myself with people who radiated kindness and encouragement, I began to shine the light that God had given me.
In the fall of 1986, I returned to the U.S., my birth country. At sixteen, I was bullied once again—this time told to “go back to Mexico” because I didn’t speak English. That moment opened my eyes: discrimination (due to people insecurities) exists everywhere. I remembered my friend’s wisdom from fourth grade and chose to focus on myself and my growth. I studied hard, learned English, and polished my grammar so I could achieve my dream of going to college and write a book one day.
Ten years later, in 1996, I accomplished that dream and became a bilingual teacher. I dedicated myself to helping my students believe in themselves through writing workshops, art sessions, and etiquette classes. In my classroom, bullying was never tolerated. I created an ambiance where each student felt appreciated and welcomed. To set an example for my students and their families, I began organizing multicultural fashion shows and parent seminars to celebrate the beauty of every nationality represented on campus.
Through these experiences, I realized that no one could love the person in the mirror more than I could. By staying close to God, my Heavenly Father, I found strength, confidence, and purpose.
Today, modeling without a filter is more than just an art form for me—it is a message. I model to inspire our youth to love themselves, embrace their unique beauty, and shine the light that God has placed within them.
Beauty is on the eye of the beholder…
“I enjoy modeling without a filter because it reminds me that I can wear any outfit and still shine my light. I do it for myself. Modeling makes me feel free—like no one else is watching—just me, fully enjoying the moment.”
